Give it to Me Straight

During the humid summer months, your hair can drive you crazy, but many area salons are offering treatments that tame your tresses and make styling a breeze.

Coppola Keratin Complex Treatment

What it does: 85-90% protein is re-infused into the hair shaft to make locks strong, silky and more manageable. The treatment eliminates 95% of static and curl from hair and majorly reduces blow-dry and styling time. It also works on color-treated hair.
Downside: For 3 days post-treatment, you cannot wash your hair, pull it back with a band or clip, or workout (to avoid sweating).
Cost: Starts at $375
How long it takes: 2.5 to 3 hours
How long it lasts: 3 to 5 months or until your roots get curly

Brazilian Blowout

What it does: 25% protein forms a protective layer around the hair shaft to make hair smooth and frizz-free. The minute you leave the salon, you can wash your hair or style it. Your hair will have body and can still hold a curl. This treatment works on all hair types and will actually improve the health of colored hair.
Downside: Not as long-lasting as other treatments
Cost: Typically starts at $250
How long it takes: 1.5 to 2 hours
How long it lasts: 2.5 to 3 months or until your hair loses its straightness throughout

Japanese Straightening/Thermal Reconditioning

What it does: Unlike the Brazilian Blowout or Keratin Treatment, Japanese straightening changes the makeup of your hair by using a chemical rather than protein. Heat is used to restructure the hair and results in the longest lasting straight and frizz-free hair.
Downside: Unlike the Keratin and Brazilian treatments, this one can be damaging to your hair  
Cost: Typically starts at $600
How long it takes: Depends on hair length, but for shoulder length hair it takes about 4 hours
How long it lasts: Around 6 months, but new growth needs to be retreated

It’s important to make sure that your stylist is certified and knowledgeable in the treatment you choose. At in-home parties, stylists may be distracted, so we recommend heading to a salon for a professional experience and a successful end result. Also, buying the products that your stylist recommends will likely extend the life of your treatment.
