Lake Bluff 4th Of July
Every community loves their July 4th (or 3rd) celebration.
How many feature a band formed in 1917 by John Philips Sousa and the chance to spend the holiday with members of the U.S. Navy? For that honor, head up to the Great Lakes Naval Base.
The vast 1,628-acre facility is open to the public at noon on our most patriotic of holidays, with only a photo ID from each adult required for entrance via Gate 1. The Navy Band, of Sousa fame, starts playing about 8:30 p.m., with several local bands opening the show.
Bring your own blanket and lawn chairs, but no food or picnic baskets are allowed. However, 14 area restaurants will staff food stations and there will be a beer tent. A carnival and activities for children go on all day.
During the celebration you and your kids will see a lot of young men and women who are serving our country, many of them with families of their own. It will touch your heart.
Nothing beats the military for putting on a great show, so look forward to outstanding fireworks, beginning at dusk.

Dorothy Andries Make It Better's theatre critic grew up in Chicago and has lived for decades in Deerfield with her husband Don where they raised four sons. She was an entertainment editor and writer for Pioneer Press and took her boys, one by one, to any play or concert her husband didn't want to see. She was present at the creation of Steppenwolf and Northlight theaters and learned to judge an acting company by its work and not by the size of its theater space.
