Where to go and what to do with your precious weekend hours? Kelly Konrad, events editor for MakeItBetter.net is the person to turn to for advice.
We beg this busy mom of three teen/tweens for tips when we get the rare date night, our parents are in town or the kids can’t stand another trip to the pool.
Here are her secrets to being in the know and her 5 faves:
I want to start with your favorite outfit.
In my fantasy life, I’m a girly-girl, but in real life it’s jeans and Keens. I’m just not wearing high heels. If I went to the Lyric, I’d wear my Keens. You just know other people do too! (Which is why this gal is always ready for an adventure, practical footwear=on the go.)
What’s your favorite thing you’ve done this summer?
Definitely traveling to Seattle for my brother’s wedding. The weather was spectacular and it was a new adventure—I’d never been.
What about around here?
In Chicago, our favorite adventure is the Museum of Science and Industry, but there’s also so much to explore around here. We went to the Chicago Botanic Garden last weekend. Yes, it was hot, but it was so fun to just wander around and so beautiful.
When you’re looking for something to recommend to MakeItBetter.net readers each Friday, how do you choose?
I usually have a theme, like “Cheesy” or “Date Night,” so the events have to work with that and then they have to have a cool factor. It needs to hit me as unique and different. Like the Chicago Air Show is too obvious, everyone already knows about that, but the Waukegan Air Show is not as well known.
It doesn’t sound like you ever just sit around.
We’re an active family and we like to be on the go, but if I ever have a quiet night, you can find me reading or watching a reality TV show. (Office mates confirm Kelly’s loyalty to “Amazing Race” and more recently, “America’s Got Talent.”)
Favorite food?
Chinese. I'm a sucker for Szechwan North. Excellent takeout!
What else do you want to do before summer ends?
I’m dying to get out to Sandwich for the antiques market and also out to Morton Arboretum with our bikes.
When she does, you’ll read about how you can duplicate the fun and adventure in Kelly’s “5 Things to do this Weekend,” which you can find every Friday in your Better Letter or online at MakeItBetter.net.
