Relay For Life Not Dampened By Early Morning Storms

Friday night New Trier's Northfield's Campus transformed into a campsite for students, parents and other community members participating in New Trier Township's annual Relay for Life

However, while the event was scheduled to continue through the night and into the morning, reports of impending storms sent participants packing literally around 1 a.m. Team members packed up their tents and sleeping bags and tried to make it out before storms hit. Some were luckier than others.

Team members still got in many hours of fun and entertainment. As Relay participants set up their tents together inside the track between 4 and 5 p.m., local band "Good Night For Now" took the stage to get things going. Planned (and unplanned) sideline entertainment took place throughout the night. Buzzed about "Will Jacobs Band" performed later in the night, and a DJ-spun dance party helped keep the momentum going late into the night.

Despite the early finish, Relay was still a major success for the American Cancer Society. And individual participants as well as teams exceeded their goals. For example, Christy Symons, team captain of Megan's Dream Team, raised the most funds out of all participants bringing in $7,830 alone for her team. Megan's Dream Team is named for Megan Symons, Christy's adorable and curly haired 6-year-old daughteróalready a cancer survivor.

This year:

There were more than 702 participants, with 81 teams in total.

The event raised more than $134,900.52.

Megan's Dream Team was the top fundraiser at $22,909, exceeding their team goal of $20,000.

Team WE RUN THIS came in second in terms of funds raised with $20,375.01, topping their team goal of $20,000.
