There's Nothing Corny About This Game!Posted: June 26, 2008

It's summer time, and here in the Midwest we are moving our recreation outdoors. Unfortunately, we seem to have a bumper crop of mosquitoes, so perhaps this piece ought to be about dealing with the most annoying creature on earth, the mosquito. It's summer time, and here in the Midwest we are moving our recreation outdoors. Unfortunately, we seem to have a bumper crop of mosquitoes, so perhaps this piece ought to be about dealing with the most annoying creature on earth, the mosquito. Nevertheless, lay in a supply of citronella products and spray, light, or rub it all on your body, because it's time to get into the backyard game season.
In our garage we have artifacts from past backyard game trends: a bright yellow slip and slide; a rack of croquet mallets, wickets and balls; a tangled up badminton net; and wiffle balls galore. A sad-looking tetherball remains in the yard from last season, its post slightly askew from winter freezes. Maybe each will get its turn in the sun this summer, but without a doubt, our current favorite family backyard sport is the great Midwestern game of Cornhole. The components and set up of Cornhole are simple: There are two "boards" set about 30 feet apart. Cornhole bags, first cousin to the beanbag, are the only other necessary equipment. Bags come in many colors, but two different colors will do. The game can be played in teams or mano a mano, whatever works for your gathering. The beauty of the game is anyone can play. Children can run up close and toss the bag in the hole, older players can apply the principles of a horseshoe toss, and anyone who needs to keeps a libation in hand can do so while playing, because the bag can be tossed with one hand! This game has become so popular that there are websites devoted to the history, rules, and regulations of the game. Why, one can even join a national association. Boards and bags may be ordered from a number of websites, but boards could also be a home project for an eager do-it-yourselfer. My only words of caution? At the end of the summer, pack the cornhole bags away in a tightly sealed container, or little rodents might be playing their own version of the game all winter!

Sounds "corny" enough to be a special 4th of July tradition!
